George Cross Miniature Medal

Instituted in 1940 by King George VI this recognised the new facet to warfare, namely the bombing campaign of major cities. Great acts of heroism were performed both in the rescue of those trapped and in the handling of unexploded bombs. The honours system at the time had no suitable method of recognition.
