Atlantic Star
Atlantic Star Awarded to commemorate the Battle of the Atlantic, it was given for six months service afloat. The location of the qualifying area differ in the case of the Royal and Merchant Navies. The 1939-1945 star must have been earned through full qualification of either 6 months, or, in the case of the RAF, 2 months service. The qualifying period was 3rd September 1939 to 8th May 1945 NAVY (a) Service in the Russian Convoys or west of longitude 20 degrees East was included. (b) The period of qualification for the France & Germany Star and the Atlantic Star could not run concurrently. (c) Prisoners of war qualified for the star provided that they had already completed the full qualification period for the 1939-1945 Star. Merchant Navy (a) The 1949-1945 Star must have been earned by 6 months service at sea. In addition a further 6 months service must have been rendered anywhere at sea between the qualifying dates with one or more voyages in the Atlantic and/or Home waters including service in convoys to North Russia and service in the South Atlantic west of longitude 20 degrees east during the second period of service. Seaman who had not earned the 1939-1945 Star but who served in the Merchant Navy in the area specified during the last six months of operational service qualified for the Atlantic Star provided that they did not subsequently serve in another operational area. In this case they did not receive the 1939-1945 Star. (b) Service afloat in fishing vessels and certain coastal craft was excluded from the award of this star but qualified for the 1939-1945 Star (c) Prisoners of war qualified for the star provided that they had already completed the full qualification period for the 1939-1945 Star, and at least one voyage had been made through the operational areas. RAF (a) Aircrew who had taken part in active operations within the specified area, provided that they had already completed the two months qulification for the 1939-1945 Star. (b) Four months service as a member of an aircrew in an operational unit, any two of which qualified for the star. (c) Time spent as a prisoner or war did not count unless the 1939-1945 Star has already been earned. ARMY & RAF on attachment Members of the Army and RAF serving with Royal or Merchant Navy units qualified in the same manner as the unit to which they were attached. General Those who qualified for the France & Germany Star or Air Crew Europe Star in addition to the Atlantic Star were awarded only the first one earned and a clasp to denote the second. This medal can therefore be awarded with the clasp France & Germany or the clasp Air Crew Europe. Only one clasp is awarded. Service terminated by death or disability due to service qualified for the star as did the award of any decoration, MID or Kings Commendation. This is an original issue medal.
