1939-45 Star
1939-45 Star Awarded for service between 3rd September 1939 and 2nd September 1945. This is the main star for world war two with others not being earned until qualification for this had been met. Those whose service was curtailed due to death or disability qualified automatically for the star as did any recipient of and decoration, MID or Kings Commendation. It should be noted however that those who received the award in less than two months or 6 months operational service must complete the remainder of the qualification before any service counted towards the Atlantic or Air Crew Europe Stars. In the case of the Royal or Merchant Navy a full period of six months operational service must have been completed before eligibility for the Pacific, Burma or Italy stars began. A single clasp 'Battle of Britain' was awarded to those crews of fighter aircraft who took part in the Battle of Britain between 10th July and 31st October 1940. This is indicated on ribbon bars by a gilt rosette. See the details on the bar for squadrons that qualified. The qualifications for UK Forces were briefly; Navy (a) 6 months service afloat in areas of active operations (b) Members of the Fleet Air Arm could qualify for the star, either by six months service afloat or under any of the qualifications for the Royal Air Force. Army Six months service in an operational area, except for service in Dunkirk, Norway and some specified commando raids and other services for which the qualifying period was just one day. Airborne troops qualified if they had taken part in any airborne operation and in addition had completed two months operational service. RAF Operations against the enemy providing that a minimum of two months service had been completed in an operational unit. Non-Aircrew personnel had to complete six months service in the area of an Army operational command, except service in Dunkirk etc qualified as per the Army. Merchant Navy Personnel who completed six months service afloat qualified prided that at least one voyage was made through an operational area. Service during the evacuation of troops from Dunkirk also qualified. This is an original issue medal.
